FA Vase 3rd Round

Tim and Steve commentated on a thrilling cup tie at MA Hart Stadium, Hurn Bridge Sports Club, Christchurch against Falmouth Town for our last match of 2020, it was a stunner. We apologise for the technical issue that affected the first half broadcast, after extensive testing Sunday evening the fault was located and put right for all future broadcasts, this means that we don’t have the first half to listen back to just the second half and the penalties.

But it was another cruel ending with a penalty shootout and the home side coming out on top 6-5. After 90 minutes the sides were all level at 1-1 with goals from Ash Pope before James Ward levelled for Falmouth.

Pope opened the scoring for the hosts early on, the visitors never gave up and to their credit made a cracking match especially in the first half with just the goal to seperate them otherwise it was a very evenly contested first 45.

Falmouth came out a different side for the second half and really pushed Christchurch all they way, hotly contested in the midfield, but Christchurch were still threatening on the break and almost killed off the tie on a couple of occasions with Wilcock and Fletcher going so close. 5 minutes to go and Town equalised with James Ward levelling the tie, a frantic end to the match with neither team able to net the winner, so someone was going to lose the hard way.

Penalties it was to put this tie to rest, Brabyn, Annear and Jones scored for Falmouth before Kellow’s fourth kick was saved by Lewis Gunstone-Grey. After Fletchers opening penalty was saved it was pressure on for every Christchurch penalty, Walker, Kirkland and then Finch levelled it up at 3-3. Broglino and Nixon scored for the visitors, it was now sudden death with Hill and Wilcock sinking their blasts, but Walker’s crucial seventh kick for Falmouth was saved by Gunstone-Gray who again had a great cup tie in between the sticks which allowed Graham to blast home the decisive penalty which broke Cornish hearts but the locals went crazy once again.

Heartbreaking stuff, but there has to be a winner, Christchurch earned a 4th round match away at United Services Portsmouth next month, although we will have to await confirmation when this match will be played die to the Covid restrictions in place. We hope to be able to bring this match to you, more details will be announced shortly.

Special mention for the travelling Falmouth fans who kept singing and beating their drum to make it a smashing cup occasion, you are a credit to you. club.

We would like to wish each and every one of you a very happy New Year and please tune into Tim Allan for the New Year Party on New Year’s Eve, check our website calendar and social media for showtimes.
